A side-view mirror (or side mirror), also known as a wing mirror, is a mirror placed on the exterior of motor vehicles for the purposes of helping the driver see areas behind and to the sides of the vehicle, outside the driver's peripheral vision (in the "blind spot").
Almost all modern cars mount their side mirrors on the doors—normally at the A-pillar—rather than the wings (the portion of the body above the wheel well).
The side mirror is equipped for manual or remote vertical and horizontal adjustment so as to provide adequate coverage to drivers of differing height and seated position. Remote adjustment may be mechanical by means of bowden cables, or may be electric by means of geared motors. The mirror glass may also be electrically heated and may include electrochromic dimming to reduce glare to the driver from the headlamps of following vehicles. Increasingly, the side mirror incorporates the vehicle's turn signal repeaters. There is evidence to suggest that mirror-mounted repeaters may be more effective than repeaters mounted in the previously predominant fender side location.

Signs and symptoms when defective | 1. The Glass is BrokenBroken glass is the most obvious sign it’s time for a side mirror replacement. If the glass is chipped or cracked, the image in the side mirror will be distorted and put you at risk of getting into an accident. Unfortunately, it’s extremely hard to detect hairline cracks in your side mirror without inspecting it closely. Unless you want a web of invisible hairline cracks suddenly causing your side mirrors to shatter, get them routinely inspected by a reputable auto glass service. 2.The Motor Inside It Isn’t WorkingIf your vehicle is old, chances are you need to physically move a knob to adjust the angle of your side mirrors. However, new vehicles are equipped with automatic side mirrors that move at the push of a button using electric motors. If the buttons aren’t moving your side mirror, then either the buttons are malfunctioning or the motors in your side mirror are broken. The best thing to do in this scenario is to ring an auto glass company and get your side mirror replaced. 3. The Mirror Keeps Angling DownwardsDo you keep having to adjust your side mirror every time you start your car? If your side mirrors keep angling downwards on their own, chances are they’re coming loose! The ideal solution to this issue is to reach out to an auto glass company and have your side mirrors checked. It’s also worth being gentle when adjusting your side mirrors and using the adjustment knob or buttons instead of pushing the glass with your fingers to adjust it. |
